Happy Thursday, friends! I hope everyone celebrating in the US is having a great time or at least enjoying some downtime. I'm using the day to catch up on candle making and reading, but I also thought I'd share a giveaway combined with a bit of a chat.
For the month of July I'm giving away a couple of books that are way outside of my reading comfort zone. If you know me at all, then you know I stick primarily to a handful of genres: YA fantasy and retellings, and dystopia and horror of any kind. I venture outside of these very rarely, but I have been trying more this year even if it hasn't always gone well.
In 2019 I've read four books that are completely outside the realm of what I'd usually read. The first was Forbidden, a YA contemporary that I ended up finding way, WAY to cringey and ended up not finishing. Next was Letters to the Lost, another YA contemporary. This one was by an author I already knew I liked and I did enjoy it quite a bit. Third I read Fangirl, a YA contemporary mixed with a fantasy fanfic storyline that I'd been told a million times to read. I ended up liking it, but not loving it. I'm still interested in the next book though! Finally, I read After, an NA contemporary I decided to pick up for a reading challenge and hated it so much I DNF'd and wrote a rant review. Two out of three likes isn't bad, I guess.
I'm currently reading two books that are pretty outside my comfort zone. Ninth House which, while it is by one of my favorite authors, also happens to be adult contemporary/fantasy. I'm also reading The Magicians, another adult fantasy that's a bit more dense than I'm used to. Sometimes it is refreshing to read something totally different!
How often do you read books that are outside your comfort zone?
Are there specific genres you tend to stick to?
Let me know in the comments!
