No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

Girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life—a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for their chance to grab one of the girls in order to make their fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism, The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

I stumbled upon The Grace Year in a happy accident at ALA over the summer. While I had seen it previously, the very pretty in pink cover made me think it was definitely not something I wanted to read. Luckily, someone went to a signing and let me read the synopsis and I RAN to the line to get a copy!

The Grace Year is not what you'd think based on the cover. This is a dark and terrifying story about a community controlled by its men and the terrible things the women endure. Every girl has a Grace Year. During this year they go together to a community in the wilderness surrounded by walls and are forced to survive with poachers waiting to pick them off, all while ridding themselves of magic. No one speaks of the Grace Year so no one knows what to expect, but every year the girls come back shells of their former selves or not at all.

Tierney is the main character of this story of her own Grace Year. She questions everything including the magic the girls supposedly have to purge from themselves. She has never wanted to be a wife and is an outcast among the others who have all had that goal from childhood. Once inside their new home in the wild, Tierney attempts to help the girls survive, only to be further ostracised and in fear for her life with poachers and maybe even ghosts all around.

I can't actually say much about this book without spoilers and that's one of my favorite things about it! I was absolutely not expecting this story to be as brutal as it was and I loved trying to figure out what was real and what wasn't alongside Tierney. There are so many layers to this story including some that were very unexpected.

The relationship between the girls was fascinating and often painful to read. Their relationship to the men was even more difficult. Even the men who thought they were doing what was best for the characters were only doing what they thought was best, rather than discussing with the women what would be best for them. Although this book does take things to the extreme, it's a great exploration of patriarchy and how women contribute and resist, terrifying in the same vein as The Handmaid's Tale.

Although I really did love this book, I did have some issues with it. I almost feel like this should have been a series as it does cover the events of an entire year and sometimes things felt rushed. I would have loved some of the relationships being explored a bit more. I also did not particularly care for the ending. It was a realistic ending, but wasn't as satisfying as I wanted it to be.

The Grace Year is an incredible read that's fast paced and will keep you on the edge of your seat. This book will definitely make you think and I found it to be incredibly empowering. I really wish more YA books about how strong women can be together had been around when I was a teen. Despite my minor qualms, this is a must read!

Weekly Recap: 10/29 - 11/5

HAPPENINGS OFF THE BLOG

Hi everyone! This week I've been back to running around like crazy trying to get things accomplished and I am TIRED. I genuinely can't wait until I have a day where I don't do a single thing. Although, am I the only person who feels like I need to be doing something even when I don't have anything to do? If I sit on the couch and binge a show I feel like I should be doing something else at the same time. I end up working on lots of candle stuff this way.

In dog news, my youngest special child managed to hurt his eye again this week. I did use the antibiotics right away and it resolved quickly, but good GRIEF can he stop? He's also still being extremely picky about his food but at least he's eating. This dog will be the end of me. My middle furbaby has to go in on Tuesday for a teeth cleaning, which I'm nervous about, of course. I always fear putting any of them under anesthesia but I know it's for a good reason. Y'all keep her in your thoughts!

This was thankfully a decent book week! I actually read two things and also got my Fierce Reads box containing one of my most anticipated reads of the season! My friend Erin's third book also came out! Although I'm not huge on contemporary romance (as you know), I'm actually enjoying this series a lot and her covers are to die for! I spotted Over the Top at Target on Friday and immediately painted the pages pink, as you do. I can't wait to dive into that one!

Saturday Screen Time #37: Spooky month is upon us!

Happy Saturday, everyone! This month I got started with the season's scary movies! I have a ton that I want to watch including some in my to watch list at the bottom (although that doesn't include rewatches). I also rewatched some old favorites in September! Because I have no patience, I ordered Poldark Season 5 on blu ray (and luckily I have a region free player) so I can't wait to dive into that! There just isn't enough time!

THIS MONTH IN MOVIES

It Chapter Two - I was SO excited to see this and it definitely didn't disappoint. I know a lot of people liked the first movie more, but I loved almost everything about Chapter Two. The adult actors were BRILLIANT at portraying their child counterparts and I every minute they were on the screen was wonderful. I also really enjoyed the Pennywise lore. I'd never seen the original miniseries or read the book, so this was my introduction to the deeper story and I was totally intrigued by everything that happened. I can't wait to buy this and watch it again! (4.5/5 stars)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition)- I decided in September to do a Lord of the Rings rewatch for the millionth time, although it had actually been a few years since I'd watched them. I only watch the extended editions, so I settled in for an extremely long watch. The Fellowship of the Ring has always been my favorite of the three and I watching it felt like coming home. I love the backstory and setup. My favorite character, Galadriel, is also in this one so she's a big part of why I love it. Every minute of this movie is perfect as far as I'm concerned. (5/5 stars)

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Extended Edition) - Although The Two Towers is my least favorite of the series, I still enjoy it. This time I did zone out a bit more than in the past and I really did forget just how long and tedious this middle installment was. My favorite storyline is Aragorn/Legolas/Gimli and watching the others, especially Treebeard/Merry/Pippin was, well, boring. It still gets four stars though because it's the middle of my favorite trilogy! (4/5 stars)

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Extended Edition) - Again, I'd forgotten exactly how long this movie was! I thought it was almost over and there were still two hours left! And of course there are a million endings, but I love them. The last movie obviously has the most action and so it suffers most from early 2000s CGI but as long as you don't look too close it still holds up. Haha! (4.5/5 stars)

Would You Rather - I watched this movie to get ready for an episode of Rosemary's Ladies. I had never heard of it and I was super skeptical when it started, but it really grew on me! I loved that, although this had the potential to be super gory, it never went too far. The concept was fantastic and, although some of the acting was truly awful, it was a fun watch. (3/5 stars)

As Above, So Below - I wasn't too sure the first time I saw this movie, but I love it more with each rewatch. As Above, So Below is an amazing mix of horror, history, and Indiana Jones. The characters aren't always likeable, but the story is 10/10! There's a steady sense of dread from the beginning and once all hell breaks loose it never stops until the end. There are so many details that I pick up on each time I watch. This is definitely going to be a yearly spooky season movie from now on. (4.5/5 stars)

The Borderlands (Final Prayer) - This was recommended to me when I went looking for amazing found footage movies. The premise is pretty standard - priests investigating spooky goings on in a church. It's extremely slow burn and downright boring at times. The scares are really subtle and the characters are all morons. The reason this gets three stars is because the ending is absolutely wild! There's no way you could guess what's coming and it's worth watching this once. (3/5 stars)

THIS MONTH IN TV

Supernatural Season 13 - Finally! I've put this season off for way too long. I actually watched the first episode when it showed up on Netflix, but quickly became bored with Jack and took a hiatus. The first half of season 13 stayed difficult to get through, but the second half was amazing! I was in a constant love/hate relationship with Lucifer and Jack definitely grew on me. I can't wait to see what happens in the last two season! (4.5/5 stars)

THIS MONTH'S DNF LIST

I didn't DNF anything! Who's proud of me?

Book Review: Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco

Reviews for book 1, book 2, & book 3

In the shocking finale to the bestselling series that began with Stalking Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose and Thomas are on the hunt for the depraved, elusive killer known as the White City Devil. A deadly game of cat-and-mouse has them fighting to stay one step ahead of the brilliant serial killer---or see their fateful romance cut short by unspeakable tragedy.

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London they knew. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World's Fair, they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders.

Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thomas begin their investigations, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they've heard of before. Identifying him is one thing, but capturing him---and getting dangerously lost in the infamous Murder Hotel he constructed as a terrifying torture device---is another.

Will Audrey Rose and Thomas see their last mystery to the end---together and in love---or will their fortunes finally run out when their most depraved adversary makes one final, devastating kill?

Stalking Jack the Ripper has been an odd series for me. I thought book one was just okay, really liked book two, and liked book three enough to keep reading. Capturing the Devil was also a mixed bag for me. I was so excited for this one because it focused on H.H. Holmes, but that was also kind of its downfall.

Right off the bat, the fourth book in this series is the most romance-heavy by far. The first half of Capturing the Devil revolves almost entirely around Audrey Rose and Cresswell's relationship and potential marriage. While I do really love the relationship between these two, it was strange that a series that has been so mystery focused so far would spend such a huge page count on romance. That being said, I did enjoy them together! I was a bit surprised by Audrey Rose being in such a hurry to marry given her character. (I also didn't realize they'd only known each other five months!)

Aside from the romance, the White City Devil was a blast to read about, to an extent. Although H.H. Holmes is my favorite serial killer (in the most non-morbid way possible), the fact that I knew so much about him made this a bit difficult to read. It was blatantly obvious who the killer was very early on and I knew who victims would be before they were found dead. Knowing a bit about the true story this was based on also made accepting many of the details given by Maniscalco hard to accept. In particular, the timeline was drastically off in a way that made the killer's actions much too unlikely.

I have really enjoyed the murder mysteries in all the previous books in this series, but I think basing this off of a serial killer who we know so much about was a mistake. In real life Jack the Ripper was never caught and the stories in Hunting Prince Dracula and Escaping From Houdini were mostly fictional. There are just too many things to compare this one too and I had a hard time suspending my disbelief.

Despite all my issues, I did still have a lot of fun reading Capturing the Devil! I loved seeing Audrey Rose, Cresswell, and Company in America and at the World's Fair. I also really enjoyed the romance and the banter between the two, even though it took up a bit more of the book than I feel it should have.

If you're in this series for the romance, you will LOVE this book! If you're in it for the murder mystery, well, there isn't much of a mystery if you know anything at all about Holmes.

Let's talk about the Grishaverse cast!

Happiest of Thursdays, book nerds! This week Queen Bardugo has blessed us with the cast for her upcoming Shadow and Bone Netflix show! I still have absolutely no clue how this show will work since it's supposed to combine the original trilogy and Six of Crows into one, but I'm all in on anything Grishaverse related! Just in case you HAVEN'T seen the news, here's the first cast photo:

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L

Okay, let's break them down starting with the OT (obviously).

First things first, my babe the Darkling. For whatever reason, he has been named as General Kirigan. I haven't a clue who the hell Kirigan is. Bardugo has responded that the Darkling wears many faces, but honestly leave Aleksander alone. He already has a name. Anyway.

This is our Darkling, friends, and I am HERE FOR IT. I really didn't know who they could cast that I'd love, but I can totally see Ben Barnes working. I cannot wait to see him on my screen as his moody, tortured self. And can we talk about the fact that he is THIRTY EIGHT years old?? As someone in her early 20s I am so incredibly excited that a 21 year old wasn't cast for this ancient character's role.

Next up is Jessie Mei Li as Alina, the sun to the Darkling's darkness. No idea whatsoever who this actress is, but I can absolutely see it and I'm stoked to see her bring one of my favorite YA heroines to life! I'm excited to see her side by side with ALEKSANDER MOROZOVA (!) on my TV screen.

Then there was Mal. Again, I don't know anything about this actor and truthfully he doesn't look anything like how I've always pictured Mal. That being said, I hate Mal with a fiery passion and I'm sure I'll hate Archie Renaux as Mal just fine.

Next we have Sujaya Dasgupta as Zoya and Daisy Head as Genya. Once again, no idea who these people are, but I love the casting of both these characters, especially Zoya! I cannot WAIT to see her let loose her skills. I wonder if we'll get King of Scars Zoya... Speaking of, where is Nikolai??

Okay, okay. We need to get to the Six of Crows cast. It's no secret that I didn't much care of the Six of Crows duology. Blasphemy, I know, but I love the original trilogy about a million times more. Still, I cannot wait to see Kaz Brekker!

LOOK AT HIM! I'd love to hear from a huge Kaz/SoC fan, but I can definitely see this being perfect (with a bit of black hair dye).

We've also been given a glimpse at a few more of the Dregs. Amita Suman is Inej, Kit Young is Jesper, and Danielle Galligan is Nina. I can't wait to see who will be cast as Wylan and Matthias, but in the meantime I am totally okay with the three that have already been revealed! Even though I didn't love the books, I can't wait to see the characters come to life on screen.

What do you think of this cast?
Who would you choose for Wylan, Matthias, and Nikolai?

Happy Tuesday! This one was tough, especially since I wanted to go in order and stick to books I've read! I had to stretch a couple to make them work and ultimately I had to skip two numbers, but it was still a lot of fun!
