Feature & Follow #35: Multiple Reads

Happy Friday, fellow book lovers! Feature & Follow is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. The goal of Feature & Follow is to meet new bloggers, make friends, and gain readers.

This Week's Question:
Do you read more than 1 book
at a time, and if so, how?

Yep! If you will just look over in the shiny new sidebar ---> you'll see that I always have two books listed as currently reading! How? I listen to audiobooks all the time. All.The.Time. If I'm cooking I'm listening to an audiobook. Brushing my teeth: audiobook. Driving to the grocery store? Audio.Book. I love them!!

I have a question for all of you! Do you continue to follow people on Twitter who unfollow you? I was brand new to Twitter when I started blogging so I'm still not totally caught up on the ins and outs. I'm under the impression that there are people who follow to get you to follow back and then unfollow... Hmmm.

Love for Books Read-a-thon

Well... as you can see, I have a new blog design as of today! I've known it was coming and I'm pretty excited that it's finally here! It combines my love for books with my love for Disney in a super subtle way that I think is just awesome! Actually, this month is bringing a lot of excitement! More of that to come with my weekly updates...

But right now I'm excited to announce that I'll be participating in the Love for Books Read-a-thon this month. This read-a-thon is hosted by Novel Heartbeat and will run from Monday, February 8th through Sunday, February 15th. There will be at least one mini challenge sometime during the week and a small giveaway at the end.

This is only my second ever read-a-thon (the first being HoHoHoRAT) and I can't wait! It's going to be a super busy week, so my goals are going to be pretty small.

  1. Read two books and listen to one audiobook
  2. Participate in the mini challenge
  3. Have fun!
I'll update here with my TBR list and my progress as the read-a-thon gets closer. If you're interested in signing up, you can do it by clicking here!

Progress

Well, it seems like this is not going quite as anticipated. I took an unexpected trip to San Fransisco, which really put a wrench in my read-a-thon plans. Here's my book progress:

Book 1: Angelfall
Audiobook: Lord of Chaos

I also participated in The Match Game mini-challenge for Valentine's Day!

Waiting on Wednesday #35: Rook by Sharon Cameron

Happy Wednesday, fellow book lovers! This week's "can't wait to read" is:

Rook
by Sharon Cameron
Publication Date: April 28, 2015
History has a way of repeating itself. In the Sunken City that was once Paris, all who oppose the new revolution are being put to the blade. Except for those who disappear from their prison cells, a red-tipped rook feather left in their place. Is the mysterious Red Rook a savior of the innocent or a criminal?

Meanwhile, across the sea in the Commonwealth, Sophia Bellamy’s arranged marriage to the wealthy René Hasard is the last chance to save her family from ruin. But when the search for the Red Rook comes straight to her doorstep, Sophia discovers that her fiancé is not all he seems. Which is only fair, because neither is she.

As the Red Rook grows bolder and the stakes grow higher, Sophia and René find themselves locked in a tantalizing game of cat and mouse.

The cover of this one caught my eye because it looks so super creepy! Sunken Paris?! Yes, please! I have a total obsession with overgrown urban areas and this book sounds right up my alley!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Top Ten Tuesday #31: YA Dystopians I Need To Read

Today's Topic:
 Top Ten Books I Can't Believe I Haven't
Read From the YA Dystopian Genre

YA dystopian is easily one of my very favorite genres to read! I love, love, LOVE most of the series I've read. For example, The Selection, The Hunger Games, and Divergent. Even most of the ones I didn't love, I enjoyed. But I'm way behind. I didn't realize this was one of my favorites until I started blogging last year. For that reason, I haven't read a lot of the popular ones from the last several years and I really need to catch up! Here are the top ten on my to be read YA dystopian list:

Across the Universe by Beth Revis
Angelfall by Susan Ee
The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
Delirium by Lauren Oliver
The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey

Legend by Marie Lu
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish -  a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers. Each week they post a new Top Ten list and everyone is welcome to join. Click here to get involved!

Audiobook Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate

Title: Fallen (Fallen #1)
Author: Lauren Kate
Publication Date: December 8, 2009
Publisher: Delacorte Press

Pages: 452
Add to Goodreads

What if the person you were meant to be with could never be yours?

17-year-old Lucinda falls in love with a gorgeous, intelligent boy, Daniel, at her new school, the grim, foreboding Sword & Cross . . . only to find out that Daniel is a fallen angel, and that they have spent lifetimes finding and losing one another as good & evil forces plot to keep them apart.

Get ready to fall . . .

This is another on a long list of books that I have put off reading for reasons unknown. The other day, while browsing my local indie bookstore, I came across a new copy of this with a bright and shiny "Soon to be a major motion picture!" sticker on the front. If there's anything that will force me to read a book immediately, that's it. I absolutely MUST read books before I see them on the big screen. Well, most of the time (that didn't really work out with The Giver or The Maze Runner). So anyway, I went straight home and got a copy of the audiobook to listen to.

Fallen is almost as dark and depressing as the cover suggests, although there are enough humorous and heartwarming moments to keep readers from throwing it across the room. The story begins when Luce is enrolled into a new boarding school for troublemakers - Sword and Cross. After several rough first encounters, she develops a couple very interesting friendships with Arriane, a slightly psychotic and pretty intense shock bracelet wearing student, and Penn, one of the only normal people Luce encounters at the school. I really enjoyed watching these two very different friendships develop. The characters were multi-faceted and well developed. I especially loved Arriane's personality! I think I would have enjoyed having someone like her by my side in high school.

Luce herself was a character I wasn't quite sure about. I didn't dislike anything in particular about her... She was nice enough, I guess. I think it was just her naivety that really grated on my nerves. I know that there's no way I could have expected her to know everything she needed to know going into this story, but her actions make her seem more like she's 12 than 17.

The love interest(s) in Fallen were slightly less appealing, in my opinion of course. First there's Daniel. From the very beginning, Daniel is a total jerk to Luce. In fact, the first interaction they have is when he flips her off. Yet, for whatever reason, she continues to seek him out. Now, I get that there's a supernatural element to their relationship. Still, I'll never understand characters who continually seek out guys who are nothing but rude to them. On the other hand, Cam is nothing but a gentleman from day one. Luce seems torn between them at first, but there's never any doubt who she'll choose (I mean, read the blurb). Again, I understand the supernatural implications, but I don't know many girls in real life who would choose Daniel over Cam, at least from what is revealed about him in the first 3/4 of this book.

Since this is the first book about angels I've read, I'm tempted to say it's totally original. However, I have Hush, Hush sitting on my bookshelf right now waiting to be read after I finish this series. I'm not sure if calling this original is really totally fair. Whether the whole "fallen angel" angle is unique or not, the story was really interesting and did keep me reading (err, listening). I really enjoyed learning the history of the fallen angels and the differences between the different kinds. The villain of the book was also very unexpected - great twist!

Lauren Kate also did a really great job of describing the environments at Sword and Cross. I especially loved the way she painted the pictures of the woods, lake, and church/pool. Not all authors are able to write their worlds in such a way that they can be visualized, but this one did and I hope that it will translate well to the big screen.

Fallen was a very quick read and was definitely interesting and I liked it enough to make me read the next book in the series. That being said, I didn't love it and I doubt I'd read it again. Something about Luce and the romance between her and Daniel just didn't quite work for me. Hopefully it'll be fleshed out more in book two! I still would recommend Fallen to fans of paranormal romance, especially those dealing with fallen angels, since I seem to have different preferences towards romantic relationships in books than a lot of my peers.

Notes on the Audiobook
The voice acting skills of Justine Eyre were actually very good - much better than some I've encountered recently! My one annoyance was that the voices she used for the men were all very, very similar. I get that it's difficult to sound manly as a female, but I wish there had been a little more variety. She did a great job overall though and I have no qualms about listening to more books narrated by her.

Weekly recap: 1/18 - 1/31

My Super Exciting Life

Well, as you might have noticed I didn't do an update last week. So I guess I'll fill you in on two weeks worth of excitement. Whoop whoop...

So last week... Um... well, my mom came over Thursday night and we had a Lord of the Rings marathon and that was a lot of fun! I got some new books in the mail (scroll down for bookish things) and, oh yeah, my whole family saw The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies on MLK day! Sorry for backtracking there. It's hard to remember what I did this morning so last week is a challenge.

This week is a little more fresh. My mom left to go back home on Monday morning and I continued life as normal, which (as you know) is super exciting! I had some serious book focus problems this week so you'll definitely be able to see that as you scroll down. I think I've moved to mostly YA books because I tried reading something by Philippa Gregory this week and it didn't work out very well even though I loved her Tudor Court series a few years ago.

The biggest excitement this week was that my mom ended up in the hospital! On Wednesday she told me she was sick and Thursday night she was in the emergency room and they admitted her for her gallbladder! She was supposed to have surgery on Friday, then they pushed it back to next Thursday so we'll see what happens. The craziest part is that my brother's birthday is this weekend and I was supposed to go to his house, but he ended up going to my parents' house. I drove that way too, but when I got there I discovered that everyone has some kind of a stomach virus so I turned around and drove myself back home! No, thank you!

The rest of the weekend I'm planning on... homework. I'm learning the basics of CSS and hoping that will be useful in the future! And I promise not to skip next week's update! ;-)

New Book Finds

I talked about my newfound book buying problem yesterday and it definitely extended to the past two weeks! But I feel like I should explain myself here... Some of these were free. Gregor the Overlander came in the mail from Kellogg's because I eat a lot of Mini Wheats, my brother gifted me Breaking Dawn, I sold some things on Amazon and got Cress, and I traded some books in at a local used bookstore and got Acheron, The Luxe, and The Golden Compass. Tiger's Curse and the two by Philippa Gregory were all used. So the only ones I actually paid for were Divergent (discounted on Amazon) and Bound by Duty (which is signed by the lovely Stormy Smith)! So it's not as bad as it looks!
