Waiting on Wednesday #30: The Creeping by Alexandra Sirowy

Happy Wednesday, fellow book lovers! This week's "can't wait to read" is:

The Creeping
by Alexandra Sirowy
Publication Date: August 18, 2015
Twelve years ago Stella and Jeanie vanished while picking strawberries. Stella returned minutes later, with no memory of what happened. Jeanie was never seen or heard from again.

Now Stella is seventeen, and she's over it. She's the lucky one who survived, and sure, the case is still cloaked in mystery—and it's her small town's ugly legacy—but Stella is focused on the coming summer. She's got a great best friend, a hookup with an irresistibly crooked smile, and two months of beach days stretching out before her.

Then along comes a corpse, a little girl who washes up in an ancient cemetery after a mudslide, and who has red hair just like Jeanie did. Suddenly memories of that haunting day begin to return, and when Stella discovers that other red-headed girls have gone missing as well, she begins to suspect that something sinister is at work.

And before the summer ends, Stella will learn the hard way that if you hunt for monsters, you will find them.

I love a good horror novel and this one looks like it should be amazing! I was a little wary about YA horror the first time I tried it, but I kind of find some of it even more creepy since there's less gore and more creep. Can't wait to get my hands on this one!

If you're a horror fan too, you should definitely sign up for this year's horror reading challenge by clicking the button in the sidebar!

2015 Horror Reading Challenge

In 2015 I will be hosting my first ever reading challenge! This is definitely new territory for me, but I loved doing a horror challenge last year and, with the blessing of Midnyte Reader (the host for the 2013 and 2014 horror reading challenges) this spooky challenge has been relocated to Cornerfolds.

The horror genre is subjective, but a good guideline to follow is whether a book is regularly shelved as horror on Goodreads.

Challenge Guidelines
  • This challenge will run from January 1, 2015 - December 31, 2015, and you can join at anytime.
  • Books must be read and reviewed in 2015.
  • Audiobooks, re-reads, short stories, and crossovers are fine.
  • If you're a blogger, grab the button below and create a post or page about this challenge and your goals with a link back to this post.
  • You don't have to be a book blogger to participate! You can track your progress on Goodreads, Shelfari, Booklikes, Facebook, LibraryThing, etc.
  • Sign up on the designated Mr. Linky below with your post, shelf, etc. and comment on this post.
  • There will be giveaways at the halfway point and at the end of the challenge in December.
  • You can link your reviews here

Challenge Levels
  • 1-5 horror books: Running Scared
  • 6-10 horror books: Brave Reader
  • 11-15 horror books: Fearless
  • 16+ horror books: Horror Hound

My personal challenge goal will be Brave Reader to start since I'm also participating in several other challenges for 2015.

Audiobook Review: The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

Title: The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner #2)
Author: James Dashner
Publication Date: October 12, 2010
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Pages: 360
Add to Goodreads
Review for #1

Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end.
Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn’t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch.

There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or you die.
The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch—the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them.

Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off.
There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers’ destruction—and they’re determined to survive.

Well, I did this thing where I waited around to write this review and now I'm not sure what to say. I wasn't sure what to say once I finished the book either, which is probably why it's taken me so long to do it.

The Scorch Trials was just a really weird book for me. Thomas and co. wake up to find Teresa missing from the place they've been taken. After a weird guy shows up behind an invisible barrier, they learn that their trials are far from over and they'll have to spend the next two weeks trying to find a safe haven in the middle of a wasteland. Each of the characters is assigned a role - Minho is "The Leader," Newt is "The Glue," and Teresa is "The Betrayer." Unfortunately, Thomas is "To be killed by group B." There is also a new boy added to the Gladers - Aris from Group B, which is explained in much greater detail in The Scorch Trials.

The pacing for the second Maze Runner book is about on par with the first - that is to say, it can be very slow at times. Maybe if I had read it instead of listening to it, it would have kept me turning pages to see what happened. Then again, maybe I would've given up halfway through. While the storyline is very interesting, I feel that it could have been written in a way that would have kept me more invested. I found myself not caring a heck of a lot when a character died or was injured... And the Cranks weren't nearly as terrifying as they should have been.

On their way to the safe haven, the boys have to fight the elements, the Cranks, and more weird creatures created by Wicked. They meet two new characters, Brenda and Jorge, who help them through the Scorch. Wicked is unpredictable, helping when it fits their master plan and abandoning everyone in every other situation The Gladers eventually do find Teresa, who lives up to her new title, but might not be as bad as she seems.

The ending of The Scorch Trials is just as weird as the rest of the book, introducing new monsters and hidden agendas. It remains to be seen if the Gladers really are through with their trials, but I'm not sure if I can muster enough interest to read The Death Cure. I'm surprised to say that I'm really enjoying the Maze Runner movie series (well, the one that's out) more than the books so far.

Weekly Recap: 12/21 - 12/27

My Super Exciting Life

I guess I should begin this recap with an apology for being so scarce lately. I went on an awesome vacation with my mom to Disney World last week and was totally missing from the blog even though I tried really hard not to be! This week has been almost equally busy and I've been sick. :-( In fact, I was supposed to go have Christmas with my mom's side of the family, followed by the Nutcracker ballet yesterday, but woke up with a high fever and couldn't make it. Fingers crossed that I'm finally better!

Christmas with my parents has been high stress, but a lot of fun! We spent Christmas Eve with my dad's side playing Dirty Santa. And you know you're from North Carolina when your aunts and uncles decide to get fried chicken for Christmas dinner... Christmas day was spent with my parents and brother. We had a nice, home cooked breakfast and dinner and opened tons of gifts. The day after Christmas was "Christmas" with our close family friends and then  yesterday... well, I already told you about that.

My husband, bless his heart, is on his way to Hawaii on a tanker. His new company sails between Hawaii, California, and Oregon, and I know he must be hating it (/sarcasm). Seriously though, it has been an interesting holiday season without him around. Hopefully he'll actually get to be home next Christmas!

So that's about it for this week. Pretty soon I'll be packing up and heading back to my apartment. As long as I'm not too sick, I'll be spending New Year's with my brother this year - and he lives next to an awesome used book store!

New Books Finds

This week was kind of a bookish emotional roller coaster. I got one book for Christmas from my brother and none from anyone else! So I shopped the Boxing Day Sale at bookoutlet.com and got my own book gifts! Hush, Hush sold out before I could buy it, so I got a used copy from Amazon... and a couple more. I'm really hoping it doesn't take as long as my last order to come in (almost a month)... I'll definitely post pics when everything gets here! I also got to use a $10 promotional gift card at Barnes and Noble to get Cruel Beauty!

Decorating my dream library at Minted.com

As my regular readers may know, I'm obsessed with my current office and future library (which I WILL have in the next few years). While I definitely love what I already have, my decor is kind of a combination of Disney art and Star Trek memorabilia. I mean, I'm not complaining - those are two of my favorite things! But I would love to have a more sophisticated library at some point. Lately I've been thinking... I have a "grown up" office now, so why wait on the "grown up" art to decorate it?!

On my lengthy journeys around the interwebs, I discovered Minted.com. I'm pretty confident I used them for my save-the-date cards, but I recently discovered they've also added art prints to their collection and they're really pretty awesome! Their prices are pretty reasonable, but they also offer unique frame options that I also really like.

I obviously already love their style, so I've spent the last few days perusing their art section in search of the perfect office decor. I obviously love bookish things and, as my blog design can attest, I love soft colors (even though I'm not necessarily the "softest" woman). I found pieces that spoke to my love of books, my love of my sailor husband, and even my love for my connection to fellow bloggers via the world wide web!

Because I couldn't keep this wonderful discovery from you, I've brought you my top ten contenders!

Feature & Follow Friday #29: Bookish Gifts

Happy Friday, fellow book lovers! Feature & Follow is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. The goal of Feature & Follow is to meet new bloggers, make friends, and gain readers.

This Week's Question:

What books did you give other
people this holiday season?

I only have two other readers in my life, but they both got books from me for Christmas!! I gave my dad S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst and got The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry for my brother!

2014 End of Year Book Survey

To end my first year as a book blogger I wanted to do something extra special so I was super excited when I found The Perpetual Page Turner's 5th Annual End of Year Book Survey! Okay, so it's not actually the end of the year, but it's getting pretty close and I don't foresee many more books in the next few days considering the madness that is already upon us. And what better time to post an end-of-year post than Christmas day?! So here it is! My first end of year survey! Here's hoping there are many more to come!

2014 Reading Stats

Number Of Books You Read: 63, according to Goodreads! I realize it's not many compared to a lot of my fellow bloggers, but considering I only started seriously reading, tracking, and blogging around June, I'm pretty happy with it ;)

Number of Re-Reads: 3 (I'm not big on re-reads)

Genre You Read The Most From: YA Dystopian for sure. I really realized that I am totally in love with the young adult genre! Before starting this blog, I had a misconception that I was only smart (or something) if I was reading "adult" books. I felt guilty about reading YA! Since then I've decided to read what I love, and that seems to be YA on most days!

Best in Books

1. Best Book You Read In 2014?
Favorite YA book (series) was Splintered by A.G. Howard and favorite "adult" book was Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
Suspicion by Alexandra Monir. I was so excited when I was approved on Netgalley, but it was kind of a total let down.

 3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read in 2014?
The Selection by Kiera Cass. I first read it when it was released and made it about two chapters in before putting it down. I picked it up again this year just to see and I absolutely loved it!

 4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did) In 2014?
Splintered. I'm pretty sure everyone already knows how much I love it because I've bugged the crap out of every person who has commented on my blog! Haha! But several broke down and read it and also enjoyed it (I'm still waiting on one more...).

 5. Best series you started in 2014? Best Sequel of 2014? Best Series Ender of 2014?
Series: Splintered; Sequel: Unhinged; Series Ender: The Retribution of Mara Dyer

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2014?
Do I really need to say it? A.G. Howard. Although there were a few others I discovered and fell in love with this year as well.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?
Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan. I rarely read high fantasy, but I've really enjoyed The Wheel of Time series so far.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?
The entire Mara Dyer series

9. Book You Read In 2014 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?
I doubt I'll re-read anything, but Splintered is high on my list, as is Bound by Duty (since I'm hoping for a sequel)

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2014?
Winterkill by Kate A. Boorman had an amazing cover!

11. Most memorable character of 2014?
Morpheus from Splintered. I LOVED every second of him!

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2014?
Splintered... Guys, I'm just going to autofill Splintered for every question.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2014?
I loved a lot of books this year, but I really wouldn't say any of them were particularly life-changing. Maybe this is what happens when you read mostly YA.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2014 to finally read?
The Selection. Seriously, I don't know what I was thinking.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2014?
"Love is beautiful fear" - America, The Elite. A simple quote, maybe a little silly to some, but it's so true. At least in my experience.

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2013?
Shortest: The Story of Her Holding an Orange (73 pages); Longest: Fires of Heaven (989 pages, but I cheated via audiobook)

17. Book That Shocked You The Most
The Retribution of Mara Dyer - the bad guy... what?

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (OTP = one true pairing if you aren’t familiar)
Alyssa and Morpheus (the WILL end up together!), Splintered

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year
America and Kriss, The Selection

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2014 From An Author You’ve Read Previously
Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon

21. Best Book You Read In 2014 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure:
The Selection. I saw it on probably a hundred lists this year and finally decided to give it another try. Best decision EVER!

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2014?
Morpheus. But you probably could have guessed that by now.

23. Best 2014 debut you read?
Bound by Duty by Stormy Smith. I'm dying to read part two!

24. Best World building/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?
...Splintered. I loved A.G. Howard's Wonderland!

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?
I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas. I don't read a lot of humor, but this quick Christmas read really put me in the Christmas spirit!

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2014?
I really don't cry about books. Like, ever. But I did come close with Acheron.

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year?
Bound by Duty. I feel like not enough people know about it. Read it!

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul?
The Song of Achilles. If you know the story of Achilles, I'm sure you understand why.

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2014?
Probably The Merciless. I love horror and I've never read one exactly like this. Maybe because it might be offensive? I enjoyed it a lot!

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?
The Evolution of Mara Dyer. I feel like everyone in this book other than Mara and Noah needed to be slapped.

My Blogging/Bookish Life

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2014?
This Is My Soul Called Life. I love Claudia's unique take on basically every post she makes!

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2014?
Splintered review! First review using gifs and it made me giggle.

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?
Why TV shows are almost as good as books. Mostly because Hook was there.

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?
The Ho-Ho-Ho Holiday Read-a-thon! It was my first ever read-a-thon as a blogger and I had so much fun!

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2014?
Winning my first giveaway over at Readers Live A Thousand Lives!

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?
There was some kind of glitch with my 8th Top Ten Tuesday post and it came away with 2177 views, so I'm going to say that one won :P

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?
Spire In The Woods interview. Spine Tingling Saturday was a meme I played around with when my blog was brand new and I eventually kind of stopped doing it, but I do wish more people had seen this post just so more people could read my favorite scary story on Reddit!

9. Best bookish discovery (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?
Book Outlet! While the shipping time sucked on my first order, I just can't pass up super cheap books!

10.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?
Yes! I technically completed all of them since none of them required a specific number. The challenges I participated in this year were the Horror Challenge, Dystopia Challenge, Audiobook Challenge, Witches & Witchcraft Challenge, Series Challenge, and Holiday Read-a-thon.

Looking Ahead

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2014 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2015?
Cress by Marissa Myer

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2015 (non-debut)?
The Heir by Kiera Cass

3. 2015 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?
We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2015?
Ensnared by A.G. Howard!!

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2015?
Double my reading goal!

6. A 2015 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone:
I haven't finished it, but Broken Skies by Theresa Kay is amazing so far!

Waiting on Wednesday #29: No Parking at the End Times by Bryan Bliss

Happy Wednesday, fellow book lovers! This week's "can't wait to read" is:

No Parking at the End Times
by Bryan Bliss
Publication Date: February 25, 2015

Abigail’s parents have made mistake after mistake, and now they've lost everything. She’s left to decide: Does she still believe in them? Or is it time to believe in herself? Fans of Sara Zarr, David Levithan, and Rainbow Rowell will connect with this moving debut.

Abigail doesn't know how her dad found Brother John. Maybe it was the billboards. Or the radio. What she does know is that he never should have made that first donation. Or the next, or the next. Her parents shouldn't have sold their house. Or packed Abigail and her twin brother, Aaron, into their old van to drive across the country to San Francisco, to be there with Brother John for the "end of the world." Because of course the end didn't come. And now they're living in their van. And Aaron’s disappearing to who-knows-where every night. Their family is falling apart. All Abigail wants is to hold them together, to get them back to the place where things were right. But maybe it’s too big a task for one teenage girl. Bryan Bliss’s thoughtful, literary debut novel is about losing everything—and about what you will do for the people you love.

As my regular readers may have gathered, I do not read much contemporary fiction. This one sounds like something I could totally get into though. I have a kind of fascination with people spazzing out over the end of the world. Back in 2012 I enjoyed the looks of horror when I told people I was getting married on Doomsday (not on purpose, it just happened that way). I think this book could be a fun look into the kinds of people who would sell everything because people thousands of years ago made a prediction! I'll definitely be giving it a try.

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Mini Book Reviews: The Elite & The One by Kiera Cass

Title: The Elite (The Selection #2)
Author: Kiera Cass
Publication Date: April 23, 2013
Publisher: Harper Teen
Pages: 336

Add to Goodreads
Review for book 1book 4, and book 5

The Selection began with thirty-five girls.
Now with the group narrowed down to the six Elite, the competition to win Prince Maxon's heart is fiercer than ever—and America is still struggling to decide where her heart truly lies. Is it with Maxon, who could make her life a fairy tale? Or with her first love, Aspen?

America is desperate for more time. But the rest of the Elite know exactly what they want—and America's chance to choose is about to slip away.

Usually I break up book series by reading something else in between, but every now and then I'll marathon a really good one. I couldn't even help it with The Selection series by Kiera Cass. The Selection was so amazing! There was no way I could NOT hurry up and read the second.

The Elite had a little bit of middle book syndrome. It definitely did drag more than The Selection. The majority of the book was focused on the politics of Illea, which was interesting, but definitely could have been summed up a lot quicker than it was.

I really enjoyed continuing to get to know the characters of The Selection. The storyline with Kriss was completely unexpected and heartbreaking! What completely blew my mind, though, was how America and Aspen behaved after! I mean, if you love someone, how can you put them in danger like Aspen continued to do throughout The Elite? FYI: That's not love.

The relationship between Maxon and America did become increasingly irritating, but remained believable. I couldn't imagine being in America's shoes as she watched Maxon date other people while she was falling in love with him. I'm not sure I could handle that process... In any case, the relationship between these two (and Aspen) was awesome to read!

As I did in my review of The Selection, I highly recommend this book to fans of YA romance! I love this series and I can't wait to see how it ends...

Title: The One (The Selection #3)
Author: Kiera Cass

Pages: 323
Add to Goodreads

The time has come for one winner to be crowned.

When she was chosen to compete in the Selection, America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown—or to Prince Maxon's heart. But as the end of the competition approaches, and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realizes just how much she stands to lose—and how hard she'll have to fight for the future she wants.

The final chapter of The Selection was a wonderful wrap-up to the series! The marathon continued with book three and I could barely put it down until it was over. That's saying a lot considering I was on vacation and I usually put everything else aside while I'm at Disney World. This series had me hooked from start to finish and I am SO glad book four is coming out soon!

The political themes continued to overshadow much of the final book, but tied in nicely to the story. I loved getting to know the new characters and learning what made the different rebel groups tick. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually can't wait to see how this part of the story plays out in the next installment.

America and Maxon continued to keep me intrigued, but I'll admit to getting a little fed up with their repetition this go round. It seemed like they were constantly having communication issues - America doing something dumb, Maxon overreacting and acting like a brat, them thinking it was over forever, and then making up. I'm really glad it finally all worked out (as if there was ever any doubt), but I wish they could've gotten there with a little more originality.

I love the way this book ended and I was sad to see the last page, but I'm super excited that there are at least two more books scheduled! I guess this wasn't a thing from the beginning... Seriously, go out and get this series ASAP if you haven't already! The romance is so good and I don't even care that it's like The Bachelor (I like that show!).

2014 Audiobook Challenge Wrap Up

Weekend Warrior (I’m getting the hang of this) 5-10

Happy Saturday, fellow book lovers! This is my very first wrap up for my very first yearly reading challenge! Hurray!! As you may know, this is my first year as a book blogger (and I have loved every minute of it!) and so all of these things are very new to me. When I came across the audiobook challenge I absolutely HAD to sign up!

You see, I don't listen to music. I listen to audiobooks. In the car, in the shower, in the kitchen, brushing my teeth, folding sheets... I'm listening to an audiobook. It still takes a few weeks to get through one since none of those things take very long, but I have greatly increased my reading capacity via audiobooks!

What I "Read"
The Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan (review)
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin (review)
The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin (review)
The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter (review)
Eve by Anna Carrey (review)
Once by Anna Carrey (review)
The Maze Runner by James Dashner (review)
The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

Currently Listening
Broken Skies by Theresa Kay

I cannot wait to participate in next year's audiobook challenge! Hopefully I can get many more in, but that Robert Jordan book really screwed me up! We're talking over a day of actual listening time! In all seriousness though, thank you to The Book Nympho and Hot Listens for hosting!

Waiting on Wednesday #28: The Heir by Kiera Cass

Happy Wednesday, fellow book lovers! This week's "can't wait to read" is:

The Heir
by Kiera Cass
Publication Date: May 5, 2015

Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won Prince Maxon’s heart. Now the time has come for Princess Eadlyn to hold a Selection of her own. Eadlyn doesn’t expect her Selection to be anything like her parents’ fairy-tale love story. But as the competition begins, she may discover that finding her own happily ever after isn’t as impossible as she always thought.

I just discovered this series in the last couple months and I have LOVED it so far! I cannot wait for the fourth book!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
